Mr. Chickee - a blind character - was played by Dave Crenshaw, a Grammy Award winning visually impaired musician in his acting debut. In this photo, he is having publicity photos taken. Birmingham Times Article Linked. We created a moving parapet (seen to the left of the image) where he could advance portions of the story. Sensory elements were adapted to help Mr. Crenshaw find center and maintain his balance while the unit moved during choreography.
For Mr. Chickee's, we wanted Flint, MI to become a character in the story. I utilized elements from Flint including nods to the weather ball, brick streets, green topped skyscrapers, and Lawrence Halprin's postmodern Riverfront Park to create a living collage of the Vehicle City's textures.
